April is Sexual Assault Awareness month on the national level, with many organizations, education institutions and others, observing and educating the public. Native American women and men have high statistics of sexual violence, in urban areas and on tribal lands. This is the month where there is a national effort to increase public awareness of sexual violence, promote prevention education and highlight support services for survivors. Today, observance is marked through public campaigns, educational programming and community outreach, but its history began long before it became a nationally coordinated effort. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the movement behind Sexual Assault Awareness Month developed over decades through survivor advocacy, grassroots organizing and the work of anti-violence groups across the country. Following are links for information and campaigns that can be used to educate in your community, your schools and institutions and your family.
